Dr. Erin Basinger’s research examines interpersonal processes as they occur in health contexts. In particular, she studies health-related stress contexts like chronic illness, pregnancy and fertility, and sexual health with a goal of understanding how people manage stress both individually and in their close relationships. Much of Dr. Basinger’s work examines how stigma and uncertainty complicate the process of coping with health stressors. For example, her recent line of inquiry focuses especially on anti-fat bias and weight stigma in reproductive healthcare. In all of her scholarly work, Dr. Basinger’s goal is to promote evidence-based, compassionate, and competent formal and informal care for people navigating challenging health experiences. Her areas of interest include health communication, interpersonal communication, communal coping, stigma, and fat studies. Dr. Basinger frequently teaches courses that include COMM 1511: Health Disparities, COMM 2100: Introduction to Communication Theory, COMM 2107: Interpersonal Communication, COMM 4115: Senior Seminar in Health Communication, COMM 6000 Interpersonal Processes in Health Contexts, COMM 6000: Stress, Coping, and Health, and COMM 6100: Communication Research Methods.
