Transfer Student Information

If you are transferring to UNC Charlotte from another college or university, you may be able to receive credit for courses taken at other institutions.

  • UNC Charlotte’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions maintains an online source Transfer Credit Advisor that can help you determine which of your previous courses may transfer. The N.C. Community College System and the University of North Carolina System have developed an agreement to guarantee that specified courses taken at the community college level would transfer to the university system.
  • Once you are admitted to UNC Charlotte, contact your Academic Advisor to discuss your record. Your Academic Advisor will be in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences advising center until you matriculate into the Communication Studies program by meeting the following requirements:
    • A “C” or higher in COMM 1101 – Public Speaking
    • A “C” or higher in COMM 2100 – Introduction to Communication Theory
    • A “C” or higher in STAT 1220, 1221, or 1222
    • A “C” or higher in COMM 2104 – Communication Studies Foundations **(Effective Fall 2023)**
    • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher

  1. How will my courses from another school transfer into UNC Charlotte?
    1. Students must submit an official transcript from previously attended universities to Admissions along with their application. Admissions will complete an evaluation of transfer courses and assign credit accordingly. Students are encouraged to access UNC Charlotte’s online Transfer Credit Advisor for help in determining how credits from another university will be recognized at UNC Charlotte.
  2. Does UNC Charlotte have the same academic rules and regulations as my other school?
    1. No. Every college or university has its own policies regarding academics. You should NOT transfer before you have thoroughly investigated these changes. You can set up an appointment with an admissions counselor in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to discuss your situation.
  3. I am an international transfer student. Will my classes transfer from my foreign university?
    1. Possibly. The International Student Admissions Office will evaluate all of your courses and determine whether or not they are equivalent to those offered at UNC Charlotte. There is a limit on how much transfer credit you can receive for coursework. See the “College Residency Requirements” in the UNC Charlotte Catalog.
  4. I am a domestic transfer student. Will all my classes transfer from my other institution(s)?
    1. Possibly. The Office of Admissions will evaluate your all of your courses and determine whether or not they are equivalent to those offered at UNC Charlotte. If they are found not to be equivalent, you will be given elective credit. See the “College Residency Requirements” in the UNC Charlotte Catalog.
  5. Will my grades and GPA transfer?
    1. No. Only credit hours you received from each course in which you earned a grade of “C” or better. If you earned an associate’s degree, the credits for all classes will transfer. No more than 64 credit hours will be accepted from any community college or associate’s degree program. In addition, a student’s last 30 hours for the degree must be earned at UNC Charlotte.
  6. I took a course at my other school that I think should satisfy a General Education Goal, but I only received elective credit. What should I do?
    1. Go to the University College office (Colvard 2008) and pick up a “Transfer Credit Challenge for a Goal Request” form. Obtain a course description from your other school, and follow the directions on the form.
  7. I took a course at my other school that I think should satisfy a Communication Studies requirement, but I only received elective credit. What should I do?You should contact Ms. Carol Leeman, our undergraduate coordinator at cleeman@uncc.edu. You will need copies of your transcripts, plus catalog course descriptions and/or syllabi, in order to determine if the courses are transferable.
  8. What are the minimum credits that I must meet for graduation with a degree in Communication Studies?
    1. The program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies is a 120 semester hour program, including 39 hours in CORE, concentration, and related coursework requirements in the major, and 32-53 hours in General Education requirements for the baccalaureate degree. A cumulative GPA of 2.0 and the completion of all communication courses and course work (general education) with a GPA of 2.0 or above are required for graduation.
  9. What is Pre-Communication status?
    1. Pre-Communication (PCOM) status is the major status declared by students prior to qualifying to declare Communication Studies as their major. Pre-Communication status allows students to register for the introductory courses of COMM 1101, COMM 2100, JOUR 2100, and JOUR 2160. Students are NOT eligible to take any of the CORE or required TRACK courses while in PCOM status.

    • A “C” or higher in STAT 1220, 1221, or 1222

  11. I transferred in as Pre-Communication status, what are my available options for taking courses? Students are NOT eligible to take any of the CORE or REQUIRED TRACK communication courses while in PCOM status. Thus PCOM students can take the types of courses listed below:
    1. Prerequisite courses (COMM 1101, 2100, STAT 1220/1221/1222, COMM 2104)
    2. General Education
    3. Track electives (Refer to your specific track sheet for a list of courses)
    4. Related course work (Refer to your specific track sheet for a list of courses)
    5. Free elective hours needed to reach 120 earned hours required for graduation
  12. Where and when can I take my Math Placement Exam?
    1. We strongly suggest students take the Math Placement Test during S.O.A.R. or in the Math Department in Fretwell 376 in order to register for any math course at UNC Charlotte. The phone number for the Math Department is 704‑687‑2580.
