Dr. Julie S. Cannon is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in
communication studies and health communication. Dr. Cannon attended the College of Motion
Picture Arts at Florida State University (B.F.A. in Television, Motion, and Recording Arts). After
that, she spent several years working in agency business affairs in Los Angeles. She developed
a keen interest in how the media she worked with so closely might be impacting the world
around her, she decided to attend graduate school. Eventually, she graduated from Purdue
University (M.A. Media, Health, and Society) and Cornell University (Ph.D. Communication).
While enmeshed in these programs she worked toward a better understanding of how the
stories and images we encounter may shape our worldview, attitudes toward policy, and feelings
toward people. She is especially interested in the ways we respond to messages that mingle
group identities with health issues, often with ambiguity. Working with collaborative,
interdisciplinary teams Dr. Cannon has contributed to publications in the American Journal of
Health Promotion and New Media & Society among others.
Immediately prior to joining the UNC Charlotte faculty Dr. Cannon was an Assistant Professor of
Communication Studies at Roanoke College in Salem, VA. While at Roanoke she engaged with
student-led research projects, developed undergraduate courses, and contributed to
collaborative efforts to address the growing role of AI in higher education. She looks forward to
continuing to engage in interdisciplinary research endeavors and to working with the fantastic
students at UNC at Charlotte.
