Communication Studies student Julio Cazares has been awarded the prestigious James McCormack Scholarship for his achievements through the Office of Adult Students and Evening Services (OASES).

In addition to being a full-time student, working two jobs, advocating for adult students on campus, and volunteering with local charities, Julio also aims to give back upon graduation. His career goal is to pursue a profession in the public service sector, specifically for the city of Charlotte.

In his speech accepting the award, Julio thanked Communication Studies Associate Professor Min Jiang and Senior Lecturer Robin Rothberg, explaining: “Dr. Jiang taught me the importance of understanding how our global society works, and how I can use information and understanding to help resolve domestic political conflicts. [Mrs.] Rothberg showed me how my words, and the intentions behind them, can be used to advocate for a cause and a purpose.”

In May, Julio will become the first person in his family to receive a bachelor’s degree.
